Amagro Mountain is a peculiar climb in Northern Gran Canaria, thanks to the specific Canarian landscapes with red moss and the muffling noise of the wind power stations. Wind will be your companion on this 7 km circuit to the top of the mountain.
As you approach the Sardina del Norte village and drop the car, you walk up via an unpaved road until you reach the Amagro mountain.
You feel surreal as you walk along the giant wind power stations and get blown away by the Atlantic wind. The red moss fields around the mountain slopes change to rural landscapes with Canarian dandelions – tree plants looking Paleolithic on their extensive roots.
Before climbing the peak, you can spot an ancient cave. In this area, the indigenous Canarian people lived as part of the Gáldar Kingdom before the conquistador militaries conquered them in 1501.
What opens up as you reach the peak is spectacular. The winds get stronger, as you barely stand on the grounds observing Agaete, Puerto de las Nieves, and the Tamadaba park.
The top of Amagro has a little shelter, so as you reach the peak, there will be a place to hide from the wind, observing Mt. Teide and Tenerife from a far perspective.
After the trail, take advantage of the blue waters of Sardina beach.
What do you need to know?
- The loop is 7.2 km. The elevation gain is 333 m. Counter-clockwise is better for hikers who prefer a slow climb and a steep descent.
- The trail starts behind the sand excavation, so your navigation can lead you to a residential street with a dog shelter. Pass the shelter to reach the trail’s starting point.
